That screen is missing SSAO to be complete :)

Thanks Mel for pointing that out.
Tried several shaders but this one works best for me: http://www.gamedev.net/topic/556187-the-best-ssao-ive-seen/page__st__200
When I improve my depth render I'll get probably a better result.

No SSAO:

yes to SSAO:

Oh, and the trees all look identical ;)

Sorry about that, each tree is randomly generated, only the billboard on the background are identical.
They suppose to look like the mesh tree...Don't know how to solve that yet.

Create imposters for each tree, on creation render the tree to a texture.

Probably there are limits to number of render textures on most machines. You can just use 3/4 imposters. Since less than 1/2 indentical billboards won't be visible it should help to fix that :).. very nice with SSAO.

You have my vote (usually I vote myself :P)
OpenGL is not hard. What you have to do is just explained in specifications. What is hard is dealing with poor OpenGL implementations.

Escen
try to add some kind of AO effect to the grass blades too, probably by editing the texturemap instead of trying to do it realtime.
you dont need imposters for ALL trees, 2 or 3 variations would be enough

i dont know who to vote for this month... :?

There isn't a rule which says you cant post the screenshot entry in another month's competition
So all you guys that didn't win this month (lets face it, Escen has already won this) you can post again in a few months time and try to win
