I was this close to trying to find a Russian GF.

Back in Summer '93 I worked on an Alaskan Fishing vessel after my first year of College. When the summer was over, I chose to stay aboard for the King Crab season. At the time, we were heading back to port in the Alluetioans (Islands off Alaska, USA) with a skeleton crew to pick up the Russian workforce since we were being "outsourced" to Russia. There were 2 Russian guys onboard that were there inspecting the ship and when I joked about working with a bunch of burly men all winter, one said:

"No, most will be women... and not burly women. It's a way that many of them break out of the poverty without having to get married to the burly men."

Unfortunately, the next day the ship caught fire and we had to abandon ship.

"All Alaskan" was the name of the ship.

Hey Saigumi,
btw, i worked as seaman, too. One year on a german destroyer. And to close the circle: One time we had to "escort" a russian destroyer through the North sea between england and norway on its way to Murmansk. From the NATO to say "heres our playground, babies". But there were no woman on their ship ;-) But behind the northpolarcircle we had no more provisions (no more to eat) and an english destroyer took our part and we could back.
