Weekend Coding Challenges

Postby rooly » Thu Jul 19, 2007 8:11 pm

Hey all, bitplane has come up with a great idea: a few of use should pop on the irc on weekends and have a go at some random application or small game.

Just recently, we tried this out for fun, and boy was it, a quick little minesweeper game.

So come join us on the irc every weekend, friday night to monday morning, and share some experiences.

btw, here's my asciisweeper:

Yeah it was fun, I really enjoyed it :)

Rooly was challenging us to beat his highscore in windows minesweeper of 14 seconds, so I in turn challenged him to make a minesweeper clone in under 5 hours..
Armen was also up for the challenge, but omaremad backed out like a big girl :(

Here was mine (3d, irrlicht, and not quite finished.. but all you're getting for a nights work)

and Armen's (SDL)

it's #irrlicht on the freenode network.

irc://irc.freenode.net/irrlicht

Sure.. We can run it here on the forums.

1) Who's playing this weekend?

2) What should we make?
I personally vote for a theme or genre rather than a game. Everyone making the same game sounds ok in theory, but I'd like to actually enjoy playing other people's games when I've finished mine.
nothing too complex or that needs decent models, something that can be done in 3 evenings. How about something simple like "make an arcade game", or "make a ball game"

3) What are the rules?
Although I'd like everyone to use Irrlicht, I'd say no rules on what it's made with. Armen is a Lightfeather defector for a start.

we could even have 2 levels of challenges:

1-night-challenge
1-weekend-challenge
1-week-challenge

I think the minesweeper challenge showed us how the same concept, as simple as it is, can be implemented in completely different ways, that rocked :)
if you're looking for me, start looking on irc, i'm probably there.

Yay lets make a multiplayer game, or the game with the most shaders possible..

Ooohh or a game thats run entirely from setting shader constants...

Ok im just being an ass, btw too bad I missed it I was keen but I thought we would get the whole weekend to do it? :?

Okay, here's the plan..
make an arcade action game that you loved, before monday morning.
No restrictions on the APIs or anything used, just have lots of fun making it!

I think I'm gonna do a remake of Jetpac, which I spent a lot of my youth playing.

Some other ideas in case you're stuck-

Missile Command (easy)
Pong/Breakout (easy)
PacMan (pretty hard)
Spy Hunter (medium)
Q*Bert (easy)
Joust (easy)
Donkey Kong (easy)
Phoenix (medium)
Defender (tough!)

LET BATTLE COMMENCE!! (who's playing?)

I've done a mine stuff in less than 5 hours for fun last year!
However never published it cuz it was really dirty code.
Here it is binary + sources:
