I think Gmax might be useful for level making, and I think afecelis still has his tutorials up for it.

You can download Gmax here

What is My3D and can someone provide me with a link to these tutorials?

try using the "search" function above. Type "my3d" (no quotes) into the text field.
meanwhile, here's a crash course for My3d and 3dsmax:
http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net/phpBB2/ ... ash+course
and here's the Gtkradiant tutorial:
http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net/phpBB2/ ... hp?t=12100

My3d is a 3d format that supports lightmaps generated in giles or in 3dsmax via render-to-texture. Developed by Zdimitor, it has evolved into one of the most used 3d formats in Irrlicht. Started out as an external loader and it is now fully integrated and supported by the engine.

For making levels, it depends on what type of program you are making them for...
but with Blender and reading the wikibook Blender: n00b to pro (forgot the url) you would be able to make levels. Blender seems daunting at first, but with the wikibook it is easy and explained in plain english...
As for BSP-style editing I would go with QuArK (again forgot the url).
QuArK is constantly in development and supports a huge ammount of Engines and Games, don't remember if it directly supports Irrlicht...[/url]

I recomend DeleD, Maplet and Visual Editor.

http://www.delgine.com
http://blitzbasic.co.nz/Products/maplet.php
http://captorsoft.port5.com/

DeleD is good becouse its free, powerful and supported by irrlicht.

Maplet is good for putting together levels quickly and can export to B3D files, which DeleD imports.

Visual Editor is an Editor FOR irrlicht. This lets you take meshes from any supported program and add particles, animation, Sound etc.

the thing with level editors, it depends on your preferences and on the type of program you are makeing a level for. :)

BSP
mesh
or something else....
it all depends...

Anim8or or Blender. Then lightmap with the free LMMaker, for example.

For levels, my very personal -free- route would be Wings for objects and complex modelling, Anim8or to mount(importing OBJs) the scene and add the smoothing normals, lmmaker to generate the lightmaps. For the zero bucks route, that is. But I havent tested that route fully. Neither how's the state of an8 loading into irrlicht. But Anim8or is a plain simple to learn UI.

But if ur rich, Max for all. Easy, fast and powerful. :)

Blender for animation by 0$ starts to rock.

Adobe ps for the textures if ur rich.If not, Gimp has all essential stuff.

 Well, I think this post has had enough answers, maybe it could be transfered to the FAQ, howtos, and tool lists?
It does have enough information and tools listed....

My world is a serie of heightmaps and models. Plus some code for LOD control. It has the feel of Joint Ops (a good ol' game). Basically Irlicht & Max are enough. The editor? Built off the 3d engine itself. BSP stuff is soo long to compile.

Heightmaps.... I think those are the most effective: just one dimension per vertex, easy to control and takes up little space... If only we could do caves like that...... :) At least that was how it was done in TESIII: Morrowind.
