Steam stats say low-end is gaining

Postby hendu » Mon Jul 30, 2012 2:47 pm

In the last few months, PCs with only one or two cores and only DX9-level graphics have increased their share. The article speculates it's due to either laptops or the East.

Dx9 gpu + dual core *gaining* popularity, quite interesting.

How is that even possible there is no more dx9 hardware produced anymore.....

Unless the machines that run XP count as dx9 lvl and a hell of a lot of people rolled back

No, Steam's hardware survey is quite detailed, Dx10+ capable hardware is marked as such even if you are running XP. What I think is, Valve suddenly had lot more survey's for steam users, or a lot of people who previously never played games much amd have a old pc suddenly bought a lot of games. Probably both are partly true.

This is their automatic data collection, so it applies to all steam users.

It's not automatic per-say, you still have to agree to submit the data.

No wonder... The low end computers are those which still run, compared to the high end, high energy consumption, highly breakable systems <- sarcasm. Still, a DX9 app is able to run on Win XP so, it is also a way to see it.

what about sold stuff that is no longer produced?
OpenGL is not hard. What you have to do is just explained in specifications. What is hard is dealing with poor OpenGL implementations.
