I want to help you! ( Programm in a team )

Post by ScreenOfDeath »

Hi,
my name is Christoph.

I´m from germany so – english isn´t my native language.
But I hope you can understand me.

I dont know where I shall put this, so I will poste it here.
Please move it if I´m wrong here :-)

I´m interested by joining a team – I´m also a hobby developer
for about 3 years, who has skills in C++ and Irrlicht and also Nvidias PhysX – Engine.
In the next year, I´m going to study IT, so I want to get as much different experience as possible :-)

I´m using Visual Studio 2010 and I´m programming in C++.
I use Irrlicht as my renderer, and for the physics I use Nvidias PhysX 3.11, and I will use IrrKlang as the sound engine.

So, as you can see on http://forum-archive.developer.nvidia.c ... topic=6896 <- These thread / video is very old!
and http://forum-archive.developer.nvidia.c ... topic=6825

I´m programming a 3D Adventure game like the good old Bomberman64 from the N64. ( Better than a remake )

And, I have some "experience" with Blender and Gimp.

But I think I want to get some more experience to work in a team for another project.

So, if anybody is interested, I can help you in your team.
I´m not a pro, but I think I have some good skills.

AND I dont want any money for my work, its only for the fun and experience.

I´m really looking forward for answers.

If you are interested, you can send me an e-mail or post it here.

Best regards,

Christoph

Hi,

as you can see on http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net/forum/v ... =4&t=45492 , there is a small video of my game ( which only shows you the shadow errors form Irrlicht ).

As I said it above, I want to help you programm your game or what ever. Its only for the experience to be in a team and work on one project.
There I will learn how do you code, and I will improve your and my coding.

( I want to join a team and help to code - and I dont want to write to every team, which uses Irrlicht as renderer )

And, if somebody thinks I only want to steal your code - its wrong! I´m offering my help for nothing (but the improved skills :-) ) - I only want to help you!

It would be better if you are using an updated SVN system like Irrlicht - which we can upload our sources to view it and compile it.

I hope somebody would like this free offer, I really dont know why you need´nt my help.

I´m looking forward to hear from you!

Best regards,

Christoph

Why not join a FOSS irrlicht game? Supertuxkart is one.

Hi,

thank you for the advice.

But this game is (almost) done.

I want to be at the begining while the basics are coded.

Does anybody needs my help?

Not trying to advertise another site here, but maybe you'd be better off on gamedev.net? They have a help wanted section for people who require team-members, mostly for starter projects
There are quite some projects on these forums too, but most of them are posted when they are already at an advanced stage, and from my experience they mostly don't need any additional team members

Also, I watched your video, but I couldn't really make anything of the game itself, you seem to show some code but other than that everything seemed rather glitchy. If you want to find a good team it's always best to show something that's somewhat polished so you can kind of prove yourself

Hi,

thank you for the site.

The video was ONLY for showing the shadow bug in Irrlicht - it wasn´t my intentional to show my game -
( yes, I didn´t drop or throw a bomb, let it explode, in a big level, used different kinds of bombs or items, I disabled animations, and enemys and more. )
Because I didn´t want to show it yet.

The code wasn´t planed to be shown, only some parts of it.
And that wasn´t an advertiesment for my style of code or something else, it was only for the demostration of these bugs.
You have to look only at the shadows, everything else isn´t important.

As I said it in the thread, its only for showing the shadow bugs.

May i ask where you got the bomberman model from? looks awefully like the one i made wants for a bomberman game of my own a long time ago....
We're programmers. Programmers are, in their hearts, architects, and the first thing they want to do when they get to a site is to bulldoze the place flat and build something grand. We're not excited by renovation:tinkering,improving,planting flower beds.

Hi, yes you can ask.

I saw a good looking model on .. I dont know where, it was maybe a site like turbosquid or some fimilar name.

Then I thoght I can do it by my own, and try do make it in blender and it works. But it costs much of time and I animated it a little bit.
The texture I used is from that mesh, but if you compare the meshs,
you would see that there are some diffenrences. The one where I made is not so good as the from turbosuqid.

I dont know if I can use your texture, so if you want that I can delelte it.
( And I dont want to publish my game :-) )

I´m sorry for that.

Well no nvm then its not mine then i guess...just looked alot like it and its probably somewhere here on the forum thats the reason i was asking.
Btw you are looking for a project to work on? Got one for ya its far from done but has all basics pretty much integrated so needs actual gameplay coding. A deathmatch gameclass is already implemented.

I might need your help.

that is... if you have any experience in fixing null pointers/bad pointers causing the game to crash.

Hi

thank you Sudi for that link, I will take a closer look into it.

aaammmsterdddam, how can I help you?

Where did the errors appear?

Can you give me access to your code?

- Usually, Null / bad pointers appear if you are trying to read/write a value in/to a uninitate object.
( Example

class foo
{
public:
int num;
bool goal;
};

void main(void)
{
int i = 0;
bool f = false;
//... do something more useful
foo *name;
name->num = 1; //<- Error, because "name" isn´t initiate!

//...do other stuff

delete name; // in C++ very important : delete your pointer!
name = 0; // for savety reasons ...
};

how to fix it:

foo * name = new foo();
name->num = 1; //works
)

You have to search where the error shall show up -
the easiest way to do this is using the Debugger - and set the breakpoint (F9 in Visual Studio) to the procedure (or before) where the error is.
Then, you can step by step (F11 in Visual Studio) your code, and view the contents of the object- which address shouldn´t be zero.
In my example, you have to put the breakpoint directly on the line where "init i = 0" stand. After that, you press F11 to step by step each commando,
until you reach the line "foo* name" -> After another step, you will see that "name" is still NULL - so its a bad pointer and you can´t have
access on it, but if you are trying to read / write something to it, it will crash there. Look at the fix, which create a new instance of the object. ( foo )

I dont know where your error appears, so, I hope this helped you a little bit.

ok. it happens when initalizing any video driver **The memory at 0x00000000 <----just a placeholder! could not be 'read'/'written' (depending on which driver)**
those are some examples... I could give you access to the code that is relevant (main.cpp other unrelated stuff are in other files :D)

Hi aaammmsterdddam,

I think you are trying to access a unintiate variable - but without your source code I can only make some assumptions.

It would be better if I have access to your code / solution, than I can help you out.

---

Did you try to compile an example from the Irrlicht folder?
Did it work? Maybe is the irrlicht.dll broken - please use the debugger to resolve this problem - or send me your solution - then we will find the errror.

I tried compiling the examples....
they work. I am aware that it was my fault... somewhere. but I said F**k it yesterday and restarted the project. (Not enough features successfully implemented and way to many glitches way to early. aka It'd be faster to just rewrite it than fix it.
